Ways to Protect Your Wood Flooring This Summer

It is OFFICIALLY Summer! Summer is all fun and games until it comes to one thing: Humidity and Strong UV Rays. It is important to take the right steps to protect the wood floors in your home during the Summertime heat.

1. Use a Dehumidifier to Control the Air Circulation

Who knew just how much the humidity can effect the elements in your home. The ideal humidity level in a residential home is between 40% and 50%. Mold can start growing on your hardwoods within 3 months if the humidity level is 80% or higher. Using a dehumidifier in the home can prevent the humidity levels to rise.

2. Vacuum and Sweep Multiple Times Throughout the Week

Did you know? Hardwood floors have an average return on investment of 70% to 80%. It is important to keep them in tip top shape. Throughout the Summertime, your kids, animals and yourself are constantly tracking in grass and dirt. Sweep or vacuum at least once a day. If you decide to mop, use a special formulated cleaner specifically designed for hardwood. You do not want to use water, as hardwood may soak it in and it could eventually cause damage.

2. Use Shades or Curtains to Block Out Strong UV Rays

Strong UV rays can discolor your flooring fast. Have you ever moved a rug from your floor after having it down for a while? You may see a discoloration in the hardwood. You can avoid this by keeping your shades closed throughout the day or at least when the sun is the strongest – between 10am and 2pm.

Historic Timber and Plank: Fruit Market Gallery – Edinburgh, Scotland

Historic Timber and Plank manufactured custom wood products for the Fruit Market Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland.

We take pride in working around the WORLD! No matter how far, Historic Timber and Plank is at your service.

History About The Fruit Market Gallery

The Fruit market Gallery brings to Scotland the work of some of the world’s most important contemporary artists. They recognize that art can change lives and offer an intimate encounter with art for free. Exhibitions, commissions, and publications are made directly in collaboration with artists. The Fruit market Gallery celebrates new thinking and offers an international platform for artists, curators, and writers, whether they have made their reputation in Scotland or abroad. The Fruit market Gallery welcomes all audiences to engage with art, encouraging questions and supporting debate.

Originally built as a fruit and vegetable market in 1938, The Fruit market Gallery has been operating as a visual arts space since 1974. Rescued by the Scottish Arts Council from threatened demolition, the building was initially shared between the Scottish Arts Council, the New 57 Gallery, and the Print-makers Workshop. At the end of 1983 the Scottish Arts Council relinquished management of the building, and in Spring 1984, The Fruit market Gallery became an independent space with the continued support of the Scottish Arts Council and now Creative Scotland.

The Fruit Market is currently temporarily closed for re-development, but they plan to re-open in the near future with more space for their art, a new learning studio and additional facilities.

Historic Timber and Plank: Custom Five Guys Wall Panel

Historic Timber and Plank has manufactured a truly one of a kind wall panel.  This panel was created for Five Guys, LLC and is displayed at their corporate headquarters in Lorton, VA.

The wall panel uses the Five Guys time-honored red and white colors and varying sized solid wood 100% post-industrial recycled blocks to create a three-dimensional panel that is 2′ x 10′ and pays honor to the French fries which they have made famous.

How many blocks are there?

There are 4,500 ¾ inch square handcrafted maple blocks. The blocks range in length from 1 ½ inch to 4 inches, and with the random pattern designed for this wall panel, no two blocks of the same size are ever in contact.

Each block was individually handcrafted and finished with custom Five Guys colors to create this unique panel.
